These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in The law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the Psalms, concerning me. Luke 24:44. For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me, for he wrote of me. John 5:46.
When our first parents sinned in the garden of Eden, God promised that deliverance from the bondage of Satan would come through the “seed of the woman”. It is believed by some that when Eve bore Cain, and said, “I have gotten a man from the Lord,” that she was expressing the hope that her child would be the promised deliverer. All through Jewish history, it was the hope of most every maiden, to be the one to give birth to the Messiah, or “the seed of the woman” (Gen. 3:l5, 4:l).
When Abraham showed his willingness to sacrifice his only son, he, by faith, saw the day when the Lord would provide Himself as a sacrifice. When God stayed the hand of Abraham from slaying Isaac, God spoke of a Seed of Abraham in whom all the nations of the earth would be blessed. The use of the singular “seed” refers to a specific person to come at a future time, the Lord Jesus Christ (Gen. 22:8, l8- Gal. 3:16).
The Spirit of prophesy would come upon the writers of the Psalms, and they would utter prophecies of the coming One, not always realizing just what they were saying. David in Psalms 72 begins to pray for Solomon, and to describe his kingdom, and in fact describes the coming kingdom of Christ. In Psalms 22 David describes the very passion of Christ on the cross, and tells us the actual words that He would cry, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken Me?”
David foretold Christ as the Son (Psalms 2:l2). In Psalms 68 which is called “the song of the ark” and was written as David removed the ark to a special tabernacle (I Chron. 15:1); David spoke with a firm assurance that the coming King would be none other than God Himself. In verse 18 he states that Christ was the Lord God dwelling among us, rising from the grave, and ascending to heaven where He received gifts for men.
In Psalms 132.11 which was also written at the removal of the ark, David repeats God’s promise to literally sit upon David’s throne.
“The Lord hath sworn in truth unto David: He will not turn from it; of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne”.
Another Psalmist writes of Christ “The Lord is my strength and my song, and is become my salvation. The right hand of the Lord is exalted; the right hand of the Lord doeth valiantly. I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation. The stone which the builders refused is become the headstone of the corner” (Psalms ll8: l4, l6, 2l-22).
Isaiah told of the virgin birth (Isa. 7:l4) and of the coming Son whom would be none other than the Mighty God, and the Everlasting Father (Isa. 9:6).The Branch from the root of Jesse in Isa. ll, is none other than the Lord JEHOVAH, who in chapter l2 is my strength and my song, and is become my salvation. In chapter 40 Isaiah sees Christ as the Eternal Creator who had measured the oceans out of the palm of His hand, walking in the role of a shepherd, when he said to get up to the highest mountain and shout to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!” He saw Jesus as the Son born of a virgin, endowed with all the attributes of God ( Isa. ll) coming as the Servant of the Lord, and bearing the glory of the Lord (Isa. 42), and as the suffering servant in Isa. 53.
Jeremiah spoke of a King, being the offspring of David who would reign and prosper, who would be named THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS (Jer. 23: 5-6).
Zechariah in Chap. 6:l2,l3 spoke of a man called the BRANCH who would bear the glory, (or as the Apostle Paul said, It pleased the Father that in Him should all fullness dwell), coming as a King, meek and lowly riding on an ass (Zech. 9:9). In chapter l0:l0 Zechariah lets us know that this One whom they had pierced was none other than Eternal God.
All the old testament points to Jesus as the Mighty God manifested in the flesh. Micah foretells the place of His birth at Bethlehem and tells us that He is Eternal God whose goings forth have been from old, from everlasting. (Micah 5:2)
Malachi said, “The Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple” (Mal 3:2). How many recognized the l2 year old Jesus, when He confounded the doctors of the law, as the Mighty God?
